[09:54]<@jacky> Calum: Hello
[09:54]<@Calum> Hey
[09:54]<@jacky> just talking to you did it
[09:54]<@jacky> it snowed here, overnight!
[09:54]<@jacky> :)
[09:54]<@Calum> Haha
[09:54]<@jacky> not much.. just dust
[09:54]<@jacky> but wind is kicking
[09:55]<@jacky> damn... it is cold
[09:55]<@Calum> We've had no more snow despite being forecast it this weekend
[09:55]<@jacky> tv says it will only last a couple days though
[09:56]<@Calum> fair enough, it's raining slightly here so I imagine the snow that's left on the ground will be gone soon
[09:57]<@jacky> I hope you don't wind up with sheets of ice though
[09:58]<@Calum> doubt it, seems to be a little warmer so the snow is mostly melting and running off, doubt it will refreeze
[09:59]<@jacky> that's good
[09:59]<@jacky> ice is treacherous
[09:59]<@Calum> yep
[10:01]<@jacky> * ChanServ sets mode: +o Calum <<< :)
[10:02]<@Calum> yeah, I noticed that yesterday heh, guess it's because my nick is registered again now?
[10:02]<@jacky> since you did that, I could, so I did.
[10:02]<@jacky> :)
[10:02]<@Calum> ah right, thanks :)
[10:02]<@jacky> old times sake
[10:02]<@jacky> heh
[10:02]<@Calum> hehe
[10:03]<@jacky> do you ever hear from Glitch anymore?
[10:03]<@Calum> we speak now and again
[10:03]<+pottsi> he's suing us
[10:03]<@Calum> what?
[10:03]<@jacky> pottsi: Hello
[10:03]<+pottsi> ohai
[10:04]<+pottsi> i was joking
[10:04]<@jacky> heh
[10:04]<@Calum> oh haha, I was kind of confused there
[10:04]<+pottsi> it's what he said he was gonna do
[10:04]<@Calum> thought maybe you guys would've mentioned it sooner heh
[10:04]<@Calum> really? why?
[10:04]<@jacky> (this is a funny story...)
[10:04]<+pottsi> maybe jacky can fill you in
[10:05]<+pottsi> i have to shoot
[10:05]<+pottsi> :)
[10:05]<@jacky> see you later
[10:05]<@jacky> Calum: I hope I don't fuzzy the details
[10:05]<@jacky> glitch let this channel go
[10:05]<@jacky> so, to prevent any shennanigans, I reg'd it
[10:05]<@jacky> and just kept it up to date
[10:06]<@jacky> one day, he comes along, I guess... and realizes it
[10:06]<@jacky> and didn't have the common courtesy to ask me about it
[10:06]<@jacky> he went to pottsi, and asked that they take it and give it to him!
[10:06]<@jacky> that's some nerve
[10:06]<@Calum> wow
[10:06]<@jacky> of course, pottsi follows the rules
[10:06]<@jacky> eventually, I think he told pottsi that he might sue mibbit over it
[10:06]<@jacky> heheehe
[10:07]<@jacky> to date, he has not asked me for this channel
[10:07]<@Calum> haha, I see...
[10:07]<@jacky> he's talked to others, but not me
[10:07]<@jacky> so.. one day, I asked the regulars here
[10:07]<@jacky> they said to NOT give it back to him
[10:07]<@Calum> I think I vaguely remember you telling me something along those lines once...not sure
[10:07]<@jacky> which, after he tried to go around me, is what I felt too
[10:07]<@Calum> yeah
[10:07]<@jacky> so... we just have a place to chat and meet daily
[10:07]<@jacky> :)
[10:07]<@Calum> heh fair enough
[10:09]<@jacky> oh.. re: FAH I still run it some, daily. not 24/7 though
[10:10]<@jacky> and have decided that I want to catch... whoever it is, that is ahead of me
[10:10]<@jacky> then, I might let it go
[10:10]<@Calum> fair enough
[10:10]<@jacky> estimate a month or something
[10:10]<@Calum> at the minute, FAH helps keep my room warm :)
[10:10]<@jacky> "electric" heat, eh?
[10:11]<+camerongray> Hey Calum and jacky
[10:11]<@Calum> heh, yep, both my CPU and graphics card throw off a lot of heat, they're not particularly known for energy efficiency
[10:11]<@Calum> hey cameron
[10:11]<+camerongray> lol - I should fold when I get my 560ti working again
[10:12]<@jacky> camerongray: Hello
[10:12]<@Calum> yeah, the 560ti is pretty decent, usually a little faster than the 470 I have but they overclock higher and use less power
[10:13]<+camerongray> Ahh
[10:13]<+camerongray> Too scared to OC mine :P
[10:13] * pottsi (Mibbit@pottsi.staff.mibbit.net) Quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
[10:13]<@Calum> 560ti's overclock really well, the worst that could happen is you'd need to reboot your PC
[10:13]<@Calum> if it screwed up I mean
[10:13]<+camerongray> I OC'd my CPU - that was terrifying :P
[10:13]<@Calum> what CPU do you have nowadays?
[10:14]<+camerongray> I chickened out at 4gHz
[10:14]<+camerongray> 8150 - Don't kill me
[10:14] * +camerongray hides under desk
[10:14]<@Calum> ah, I've never OC'd one of those, I was out of OcUK before Bulldozer came out so I've not personally used one
[10:14]<+camerongray> Ahh
[10:14]<@Calum> used enough of the 9 series AMD boards though...never again
[10:15] * @Calum shudders
[10:15]<+camerongray> Really not as bad as the reviews say though
[10:15]<+camerongray> I have the GA-990FXA-UD5 - seems fine here
[10:15]<@Calum> fair enough
[10:15]<@Calum> maybe they improved it since I used it
[10:15]<+camerongray> The heatsinks on it get toasty though
[10:15]<@Calum> the ones I used, along with the UD7, were a massive steaming pile of excrement
[10:15]<+camerongray> lol
[10:15]<+camerongray> In what way?
[10:15]<@Calum> as were the MSI boards but that goes without saying
[10:16]<@Calum> stability was awful even at stock, the BIOS was terrible, and they overclocked really badly
[10:16]<@Calum> Crosshair V was awful as well
[10:16]<+camerongray> Ahh - mine seems fine, the BIOS isn't great but the rest is fine
[10:17]<@Calum> I just thought that for saying they were targeted at anthusiasts, the BIOS controls were bad. The VDroop was terrible, load line calibration was virtually nonexistent, and the voltage steps were huge, no fine tuning
[10:17]<@Calum> their previous AMD boards were good so no idea why they dropped the ball on the 9 series
[10:17]<@Calum> I think if they'd just put more work into the BIOS it would've been a good board
[10:18]<@jacky> "on the 9 series" << what brand name?
[10:18]<@Calum> but that goes for most Gigabyte boards, the boards aren't fundamentally bad just their BIOSes have been awful and their updates rarely fix existing issues
[10:18]<@Calum> all of them
[10:18]<@Calum> lol
[10:18]<@jacky> lost me
[10:18]<@jacky> sorry
[10:19]<@jacky> are you talking about Gigabyte mbs?
[10:19]<@Calum> sorry I was talking about Gigabyte boards mainly, but every manufacturer's 9 series boards (AMD 9xx chipset) have been worse than their previous models
[10:19]<+camerongray> Yeah
[10:19]<@Calum> IMO, anyway
[10:19]<@jacky> ok
[10:19]<+camerongray> Yeah - works fine for me
[10:19]<+camerongray> Just a pain that Mac OS Lion doesn't have an AMD kernel yet
[10:19]<@jacky> I don't overclock, nor have hi-perf needs
[10:20]<@jacky> when the Asus board acted up , I replaced it with Gigabyte, and have had no problems
[10:20]<@Calum> yeah, if it works then that's all good, not trying to knock what you've got. it's just when I used them, I had nothing but problems, but they were pretty new at the time, plus BD wasn't out. We did hope maybe they would be better with the CPUs they were designed for
[10:20]<@jacky> fingers crossed, that it lasts many years.....
[10:20]<+camerongray> lol - Like your K6-2
[10:20]<@jacky> BD ?
[10:20]<@Calum> jacky: yeah, I remember you telling me that, that was an 8 series Gigabyte though, right?
[10:20]<@Calum> BD = Bulldozer
[10:20]<@jacky> camerongray; yep! was it 10 years? or 12? something like that. heheheeh
[10:20]<+camerongray> lol
[10:20]<@jacky> what is bulldozer?
[10:21]<+camerongray> AMD's new CPUs
[10:21]<+camerongray> replaced the Phenoms
[10:21]<@jacky> ok
[10:21]<@jacky> Calum: I'd have to check to be sure, but I think this is my board:
[10:21]<@jacky> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128435
[10:21]<@jacky> O
[10:21]<@Calum> If I remember rightly, some manufacturers did acknowledge issues with AM3 chips on 9 series boards...hence why I think the Bulldozer AM3+ chips have been better
[10:22]<@Calum> jacky: yeah, that's an 8 series, the 9 series equivalent would be the 990-blahblah
[10:22]<@jacky> and the 9 series is what yo uwere talking about?
[10:22]<@Calum> yes
[10:22]<@jacky> 9 series is for the BD cpu?
[10:22]<@Calum> well, they have an AM3+ socket, so they can take BD or older chips like yours
[10:23]<@Calum> but it seems if you put an older chip in, they don't really like it
[10:23]<@jacky> ok. what did the change in series number denote? anything special?
[10:23]<@Calum> it was just odd because the boards were available months before the new chips, hence why we had to use them with older CPUs
[10:23]<@Calum> the main change is official SLI support on the 9 series
[10:23]<@jacky> sli is two vid cards, if I recall
[10:23]<@jacky> one type of it...
[10:23]<@jacky> right?
[10:23]<@Calum> a lot of manufacturers use the exact same boards and just change the number and the chip itself
[10:24]<@Calum> yes, it's the Nvidia multi card tech
[10:24]<@jacky> ok
[10:24]<@Calum> you could use it on the 8 series but only with a driver hack
[10:24]<@jacky> what are you liking today? Asus?
[10:24]<@Calum> depends what for really
[10:24]<@jacky> ... go on...
[10:24]<@jacky> :)
[10:25]<@Calum> heh, well for the older Intel chips, like mine (2009 ish) yeah, Asus. For newer Intel chips, 2011 onwards, it's a bit of a tossup
[10:25]<@Calum> AMD, mostly Asus, but some of the Gigabytes have been decent too
[10:25]<+camerongray> I want a 2011 :P
[10:25]<@jacky> where is the world in the AMD vs Intel cycle now?
[10:25]<@Calum> Intel dominating in performance, no question
[10:26]<@jacky> to me.. they always seemed to cycle... one would be "better" for a while, then the other would leapfrog
[10:26]<+camerongray> true
[10:26]<@Calum> AMD can be good in price/performance but...I heard they're not aiming for outright performance any more
[10:26]<@jacky> they might have a bigger market then
[10:26]<@Calum> AMD haven't led in top performance since the Core 2 Duo came out in 2005 or so
[10:26]<+camerongray> yeah - Works fine for me but a pain when trying to hackintosh
[10:26]<@jacky> outright perf is limited to hard core hobbiests.. .right?
[10:26]<@Calum> but they've always competed well in price/performance
[10:27]<@Calum> yes, however AMD still have a pretty small market share, Intel's marketing is much better so they sell more even to people who don't care for performance
[10:27]<@jacky> re: marketing and advertising: yep.. that can be huge
[10:27] * pottsi (Mibbit@pottsi.staff.mibbit.net) has joined #glitchpc
[10:27]<@jacky> pottsi: wb
[10:27]<@jacky> pottsi: been sued since you been gone?
[10:27]<@jacky> <g>
[10:28] * ChanbotV sets mode: +v pottsi
[10:28]<@Calum> plus don't forget the antitrust lawsuits against Intel, when they paid companies like Dell to not sell any AMD based systems for a long time
[10:28]<@jacky> if I'd heard that, I forgot it
[10:28]<@jacky> yes... I imagine that was a heck of a lawsuit
[10:28]<@jacky> heh
[10:28]<@Calum> it was a few years ago now
[10:29]<@jacky> I'm not married to either
[10:29]<@jacky> then again, I don't purchase often
[10:29]<+camerongray> lol = you sure don't :P
[10:29]<@jacky> so whatever is 'it' and suits my needs, vs $$ at the time, is what I go with
[10:29]<@Calum> but, if that hadn't happened, i.e. if Dell had sold AMD and intel equally, I'd imagine the playing field would be much more level, and AMD would have had much more money for R&D so they'd be more competitive
[10:29]<@jacky> Calum: you should have majored in marketing
[10:29]<@jacky> heh
[10:29]<@Calum> I've had both depending what suited me at the time, I've no loyalty to certain brands I just buy what's good and what works for me
[10:30]<@Calum> haha
[10:30]<+pottsi> yeh
[10:30]<+pottsi> i lost control over #glitchpc
[10:30]<@jacky> and "what works" seems to - or used to - change about every 6 months or so
[10:30]<+pottsi> it's copyrighted
[10:30]<+pottsi> you're all screwed
[10:30]<@jacky> !!!!!! horrors!!!!
[10:30]<+pottsi> ikr
[10:30]<+camerongray> So true - all those stupid mac/pc and amd/intel things are dumb
[10:30]<@jacky> here... here's 10 cents... that's all I can afford
[10:31]<@Calum> jacky: yep, it sure does. My systems in the last 2 years have been based around "what can I get that's very cheap or free that's pretty good" hehe
[10:31]<+pottsi> xD
[10:31]<+pottsi> how can i change my headphone jack
[10:31]<+pottsi> to use my mic jack as headphones
[10:31]<+camerongray> lol - I wsih I could get cheap free stuff
[10:31]<@jacky> pottsi: use a small hammer
[10:31]<+pottsi> port*
[10:31]<@jacky> don't hit it too hard though
[10:31]<+pottsi> xD
[10:31]<@Calum> camerongray: I can't so much, anymore...but I got a free 6 core Phenom, that was nice
[10:32]<+camerongray> grrr :P
[10:32]<+camerongray> The extent of my free stuff is P3 era
[10:32]<@jacky> pottsi: Calum may still have his ram hammer, from when he used to build commercial computers.
[10:32]<@Calum> pottsi: what sound card do you have, is it onboard Realtek? If so you can do it in their control panel though I can't remember how
[10:32]<+pottsi> not sure i'll look
[10:32]<+pottsi> thanks
[10:32]<@Calum> I have an Asus card and I can't do it, just remember it's possible with Realtek
[10:32]<@Calum> jackY: did I ever tell you about the SLI hammer?
[10:33]<+camerongray> I wish there was a company like OCUK near me
[10:33]<@jacky> can't remember. proceed, please
[10:33]<@jacky> this ought'a be good
[10:33]<+camerongray> Could get a job there
[10:33]<@Calum> Heh, the guy who was my manager when I started at OcUK, he had this big orange rubber hammer, pretty hefty thing
[10:33]<@Calum> They got all these "SLI Ready" stickers from Nvidia to use as marketing, so they were all over this hammer
[10:33]<@Calum> We used it for a lot of things hehe
[10:34]<@jacky> hehehe
[10:34]<@Calum> there was a heatsink we used for a while which had really bad QC...the bolts didn't fit through these holes, without the use of the SLI hammer
[10:34]<+camerongray> lol - "GET IN THERE!! Oh, it needs DDR3"
[10:34]<@jacky> fun stuff, huh
[10:34]<@Calum> so it was an essential tool, without which OcUK would've been screwed!
[10:34]<@Calum> we used it to straighten bent cases
[10:35]<@Calum> it was a useful thing
[10:35]<@jacky> stress relieving too, eh?
[10:35]<+camerongray> lol - Why can't OCUK be in edinburgh??? :P
[10:35]<@Calum> camerongray: believe me, working for OcUK wasn't a great thing, not long term
[10:35]<@Calum> hehe yep
[10:36]<+camerongray> Well, any custom PC company
[10:36]<@jacky> every time you guys use "OCUK" it looks like a typo'd version of an bad word. hehe
[10:36]<@Calum> yeah, it's a good job, it can be fun
[10:36]<+camerongray> lol
[10:36]<+camerongray> I mean, there are small repair shops but I don't think they are hiring
[10:36]<@jacky> he found the bold key
[10:36]<+camerongray> How did I do that
[10:36]<@Calum> yeah it's rare to see small places like that hiring really
[10:37]<@jacky> like this
[10:37]<+camerongray> lol
[10:37]<+camerongray> It's a pain
[10:37]<@jacky> if you lean to the right, you can do this too
[10:37]<+camerongray> I'll probably end up in a phone shop or something
[10:37]<@Calum> phone shops aren't bad money, if you can sell...you can get a lot through commission
[10:38]<@Calum> I nearly ended up working for 3
[10:38]<@Calum> 3 the company, not 3 different shops heh
[10:38]<@jacky> brb... finding something to eat
[10:38]<@Calum> alright
[10:38]<+camerongray> lol - I;m with three

[10:42]<@Calum> he quit because of all the morons...not the customers, the guys working there
[10:42]<@Calum> heh, yeah, exactly
[10:42]<+camerongray> lol
[10:43]<@Calum> they want to be able to train people who apply basically from the ground up
[10:43]<+camerongray> yeah
[10:43]<@Calum> so people with existing knowledge, they don't tend to take on
